Any 80s child will be able to tell you all about Transformers. It was a fundamental part of growing up during that era, just as much as the Soda Stream and Commodore 64 were! And whilst Transformers appeared to go off of the radar for a while, it was always there in the background, waiting for its moment to make a spectacular comeback and thrill a whole new generation of robot fans.
The Transformers franchise started back in 1985, a joint collaboration of the toy manufacturers Hasbro and Takara Tomy. The two factions of warring robots, the Autobots (the good guys) and the Decepticons (the bad guys) came to life both on the screen as an animated television series and as a thrilling comic book. Both formats hooked a whole generation of fans and sparked off a market for Transformers toys.
The first toys were an exciting enigma for children; all of the robots looked like “humanly” recognisable objects such as trucks, planes and even one that looked like a Cherry Coke can! Yet, with some nimble fingered manoeuvres, these ordinary looking objects transformed into ready-for-action robots, equipped with lasers and missiles to wage war on their enemies.
The “rebirth” of Transformers for the younger generation could quite rightly be attributed to the film which was released in 2007. The smart, smooth and action-packed CGI film was a hit with a whole new generation of children and even provided fond memories for those of us who were former Transformers fans.
Indeed, the initial 2007 film has been so successful it has sparked several sequels and a multitude of merchandise. Whether you are a completely new fan or one that has been reawakened to the joy of the object-come-robot battles that you can have in your bedroom, you will find some wonderful toys to add to or start your collection.
